What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax), commonly called Sales Tax in Pakistan, is a tax you pay when you buy goods or services. When you purchase anything from a mobile phone to restaurant food, a percentage of what you pay goes to the government as GST.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collects this tax under the Sales Tax Act, 1990. The standard GST rate in Pakistan is 18%, but different sectors have different rates. For example, telecom services are taxed at 19.5%, while restaurants pay 16%.
Think of it simply: if a product costs PKR 1,000 and GST is 18%, you pay PKR 1,180. The extra PKR 180 is GST that goes to the government for schools, hospitals, and roads.
